What Is a Comprehensive Dental Exam?

A comprehensive dental exam is a complete diagnostic evaluation of your oral health and hygiene. This thorough checkup allows us to assess the current state of your teeth, gums, bite, and jaw, and to catch potential problems early when they're easiest to treat.

During your exam, our doctor or hygienist will carefully evaluate every aspect of your oral health to create a clear picture of your dental needs.

What Happens During Your Exam

Your comprehensive dental exam may include:

  • Checking for signs of decay or periodontal disease – We examine each tooth and your gum tissue to identify cavities, gum inflammation, or other concerns.
  • Reviewing your medications – Certain medications can affect your oral health, so we'll ask about what you're taking.
  • Taking dental x-rays – Digital x-rays help us see what's happening beneath the surface, including between teeth and below the gum line.
  • Evaluating your occlusion (bite) – We check how your upper and lower teeth come together to identify bite issues that could cause wear or discomfort.
  • Evaluating your jaw – We assess your jaw joint and muscles for signs of TMJ problems or other concerns.
  • Discussing proper cleaning techniques – We'll review your home care routine and offer personalized tips for brushing and flossing.
  • Removing stains or debris – We'll clean away surface stains and buildup to leave your teeth feeling fresh.
  • Taking a dental impression – If needed, we may take an impression for records or treatment planning.

Oral Cancer Screening

As part of your comprehensive exam, we also perform an oral cancer screening. This involves gently feeling around your cheeks, gums, tongue, under your jaw, and the sides of your neck for any unusual lumps, sores, or tissue changes. Early detection is key to successful treatment, and this quick screening provides important peace of mind.

A Foundation for Lifelong Oral Health

Your comprehensive dental exam is the foundation of preventive care. It helps us partner with you to maintain a healthy, comfortable smile for years to come. If we do find any issues, we'll explain them clearly and discuss your treatment options in a calm, supportive environment.

Common questions
How often should I have a comprehensive dental exam?+

Most patients benefit from a comprehensive exam once a year, with shorter checkups and cleanings every six months. We'll recommend a schedule based on your individual oral health needs.

Will the exam hurt?+

No, a comprehensive dental exam is painless. We use gentle techniques and will let you know what to expect at each step. If you have dental anxiety, please let us know so we can help you feel comfortable.

Are x-rays safe?+

Yes. We use modern digital x-rays that emit very low levels of radiation—far less than traditional film x-rays. They're an essential tool for diagnosing problems we can't see with the naked eye.
